East-European forest experiment station was established in 1926. Principal areas of activities: development of forest management systems for mid-Volga region (the Republics of Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Udmurtia, Mary El and Uljanovskaya, Orenburskaya, Saratovskaya regions). Research areas – thinnings, forest plantations, tree species breeding and seed production, forest protection against pests and diseases. The branch has 3 structural units: “A.Tolsky Borovaya FES” base station, “Chuvashsky oakwood study center” “Maryjsky forest research center”.

Central-European forest experiment station was established in 1956. Principally the branch is focused on research in central part of European Russia (Kostromskaya, Yaroslavskaya, Ivanovsskaya, Novgorodsskaya, Kirovskaya regions), investigations of forest ecosystems and zonal forest specifics and development of forest use, conservation, protection and regeneration technologies, tree sspecies breeding and seed production, agrotechnology to produce and breed new species of valuable wild berry plants. Developments on thinnings in the 2'nd spruce layer in hardwood forests and birch and spruce breeding and seed production are of high scientific and practical value.

 

South-European FRES

"South-European research forest experiment station" was established in 1949. Main branch activities are aimed at development of recommendations on forest management in the Don bottomland and afforestation of lands in small river water protection zones. Developments on establishment of bottomland forests and pine strip plantations on sands, research fundamentals to regulate oak succession processes, main poplar species variety testing, management of black alder stands, improvement of forest pest propagation control and forecast are of great value.

Siberian forest experiment station was established in 1968 for studies of zonal forest characteristics and verification of forest management procedures in West Siberia (Tumenskaya region, Yamalo-Nenetsky and Khanty-Mansiysky autonomous districts). Prior research areas are regeneration thinning, forest regeneration, forest ecology.
