Expedition trip to inaccessible forest in the Tumenskaya region

The Tmenskaya region wildlife impresses researchers with landscape diversity blending vast spaces of the Ob and Irtysh bottomlands with taiga forestlands. But poor territory access and complicated hydrological situation make taiga forest resource operational assessment with inventory procedures on the basis of field studies difficult. Development of technologies that enable acceptable accuracy remote sensing based assessment of forest resources with field operation minimization is needed to get data on vast forestlands.

The expedition of the VNIILM department for silviculture and forest management and the VNIILM subsidiary “Siberin forest experiment station” to the taiga woods in the Nizhnetavdinsky, Tobolsky, Uvatsky and Vagaisky districts of the Tumenskaya region was targeted to address these goals. Key task was to get inventory indicators for forests characteristic in these districts representing forest age dynamics. The found information is needed to develop inventory decoding procedures for various forests in inaccessible areas. Some sample plots were established in various forest growing conditions in pine, Siberian stone pine, spruce, birch and aspen woods during the expedition trip. In field studies pure forests had an advantage to get spectral characteristics depending on age, density and forest growing conditions.  Key challenge of experimental work was hard access to the territory and few all season roads. Officers of the Nizhnetavdinsky,  Uvatsky, Vagaisky forest districts and the Tumenskaya airbase provided sufficient support in search of necessary forests.

Study findings will serve  as a background for West Siberia taiga forest inventory decoding procedure development. This work was done within the research to develop updated forest inventory procedures based on Earth remote sensing data analysis. Officers of the VNIILM department for silviculture and forest management and the VNIILM subsidiary “Siberin forest experiment station” participants of the expedition trip express gratitude to senior managers of the Nizhnetavdinsky,  Uvatsky, Vagaisky forest districts and the Tumenskaya airbase for their assistance.
